Meridia, the newest diet drug in the market, is touted to induce weight loss among obese persons. Like its predecessors dexfenfluramine and fenfluramine which have been withdrawn from the market, Meridia has minor side effects that include insomnia and constipation. It is not recommended for those with a history of high blood pressure or cardiovascular ailment.

"Glamour" magazine's reader survey showed a worsening trend in the satisfaction women had regrading their own bodies. Only 48% of women int he 1998 survey responded that they were happy with their bodies, compared to 59% of respondents in 1984.
