The missing links between practice and theory
Article Abstract:
Nurse educators should be clinically competent. They should be able to deliver care on the wards in the way that they teach it in the classroom. Many experts have commented on the gap between nurse education and practice, and some have suggested new models for nurse education. One role to emerge is that of the lecturer practitioner. This post, which is often jointly funded, aims to look at standards in a clinical area and to contribute to the education related to that clinical area, but it can be a difficult task. Another recommendation is for educators to spend one day a week on a ward.

Critical pathways: an aid to practice
Article Abstract:
The use of critical pathways medical management technique was introduced in a UK cardiology unit, allowing staff to spend less time on documentation while reducing the incidents of patient's pain and complaints. Multidisciplinary critical care pathways (MDCPs) allow care to be planned for each individual patient using forecasts. Nurses need to be trained to use MDCPs and to change procedures to accommodate the new technique.
