Liquid-based cervical cytologic smear study and conventional Papanicolaou smears: a metaanalysis of prospective studies comparing cytologic diagnosis and sample adequacy
Article Abstract:
The ThinPrep test for analyzing cervical smears is more accurate in detecting some cervical abnormalities than the traditional Pap test, according to researchers who evaluated 25 studies that compared the two techniques. However, it is also more expensive and this review did not determine whether ThinPrep is cost-effective.

The predictive value of cytologic testing in women with the human immunodeficiency virus who have low-grade squamous cervical lesions: a substudy of a randomized, phase III chemoprevention trial
Article Abstract:
Regular Pap tests may not be a reliable method for following HIV-infected women who have early-stage cervical cancer, according to a study of 117 HIV-infected women. These women had both a Pap test and a cervical biopsy that was analyzed by a pathologist. The pathological examination showed that 21 women had progressed to a later stage of cervical cancer. However, the Pap test had only identified four of these women.

Assessing gains in diagnostic utility when human papillomavirus testing is used as an adjunct to Papanicolaou smear in the triage of women with cervical cytologic abnormalities
Article Abstract:
Simple formulas are provided to determine whether it is cost-effective to combine a Pap smear with a test for human papillomavirus. This would only be done if the Pap smear was abnormal. However, sometimes two or more tests are not cost-effective and do not improve the accuracy of the test.
