The public health management of meningococcal disease
Article Abstract:
It can be hard to diagnose meningococcal disease, particularly in the early stages. However, rapid diagnosis and treatment are vital if the disease is to be controlled. A diagnosis of meningitis should be considered in the case of all ill, febrile children, including teenagers. They should be checked all over for a rash, which can be non-specific, especially in the initial stages. An initial diagnosis of meningococcal disease is frequently based on clinical findings. Primary care and community nurses must ensure that information about meningococcal disease is disseminated as widely as possible.

Article Abstract:
The management of a total of 81 confirmed cases of scabies at a nursing home in the UK between Sep 1997 and Jan 1998 has highlighted the lack of contingency funding by health authorities for the management of scabies outbreaks. This incident has also indicated that there are no clear guidelines for community-based health professionals about the use of unlicensed drugs for controlling scabies outbreaks. There is a clear need for infection control teams in the community to seek to limit scabies infection by making available routine staff education in scabies management.
