Fetal exposure to an intra-amniotic inflammation and the development of cerebral palsy at the age of three years
Article Abstract:
An infection in the uterus during pregnancy could increase the baby's risk of developing cerebral palsy, according to a study of 123 pregnant women and their babies who were followed for up to three years after birth.

The relationship among inflammatory lesions of the umbilical cord (funisitis), umbilical cord plasma interleukin 6 concentration, amniotic fluid infection, and neonatal sepsis
Article Abstract:
Examination of tissue samples of the placenta shortly after birth can identify newborn babies who may have a serious condition called fetal inflammatory response syndrome. The analysis can identify inflammation of the umbilical cord, which may be a marker of intrauterine infection.

Amniotic fluid interleukin-6: a sensitive test for antenatal diagnosis of acute inflammatory lesions of preterm placenta and prediction of perinatal morbidity
Article Abstract:
The presence of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in amniotic fluid appears to more accurately identify preterm infants at risk for complications due to inflammation of the fetal membranes than positive cultures of amniotic fluid. IL-6 is a substance produced as part of the inflammatory process, generally in response to infection. In a Seoul, Korea hospital, 29 women in labor at 24 to 35 weeks gestation with ruptured membranes and 21 similar women with intact membranes had an amniocentesis. The amniotic fluid sample was both cultured and analyzed for IL-6. The presence of more than 17 nanograms per milliter of IL-6 accurately predicted 79% of cases of membrane inflammation as determined after birth and 69% of infant deaths and serious complications. No infant that did not have membrane inflammation tested positive for IL-6. Amniotic fluid culture identified 38% of cases of membrane inflammation and 27% of deaths and serious complications.
