The relationship between firearm design and firearm violence: handguns in the 1990s
Article Abstract:
The number and severity of firearm-related injuries could increase as gun manufacturers design smaller and more powerful weapons. Semiautomatic pistols have replaced the revolver as the weapon of choice in many cities. As a result, injuries tend to be more severe because more bullets can be fired in the same amount of time. Many large, expensive guns have been designed to hold more ammunition of a larger caliber. Pistols are becoming simpler to operate because double-action guns are replacing single-action guns. The user of a double-action gun does not need to cock the hammer manually before firing. Guns are also lighter and consequently cheaper because they are made of polymers. Many gun manufacturers are now making small, inexpensive guns that can be carried concealed. The passage of laws in 28 states making it legal for ordinary citizens to carry a concealed weapon has created a huge market for these guns.

The Firearm Fatality Reporting System: a proposal
Article Abstract:
The US needs a national reporting system for deaths caused by firearms, which total 34,000 in the US each year. Regulation of firearms has been difficult because policymakers do not have the data to determine which kinds of guns are involved in various crimes. The Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) collects data on injuries and death caused by automobile accidents, and has been used to evaluate speed limits and automobile safety. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) collects homicide reports in its Uniform Crime Reporting System, but suicides and unintentional firearm deaths are not recorded. A Firearm Fatality Reporting System, which could be kept by the Centers for Disease Control, could record information on the type of gun used, the type of incident, the age, sex and race of the victim and assailant, details of the incident, and whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

Regulating firearm advertisements that promise home protection: a public health intervention
Article Abstract:
The American Academy of Pediatrics is one of several organizations that have petitioned the Federal Trade Commission to begin regulating the advertisement of firearms. Many firearm manufacturers advertise the benefits of having a firearm in the home. However, 70% of all homicides that occur in homes are committed by a family member or acquaintance rather than an unknown intruder. Guns are also used in many suicides. Many firearm ads could be considered misleading and unlawful and may not be protected by the First or Second Amendments to the Constitution.
