The risks of polypharmacy: More medicines than are clinically indicated are often prescribed for older patients
Article Abstract:
There is always some degree of risk in the prescribing and administration of medicines, and such risks are magnified in the very your and older age groups. Coexisting diseases processes may make drug treatment in older people even more complicated, and patients can be exposed to the dangers of polypharmacy, where more medicines are prescribed and administered than are clinically indicated. The risks of polypharmacy in older people can be reduced by involving the patients themselves in decisions about their medicines, improved technological support in supply and use, and a multidisciplinary approach.
