The role of the nurse
Article Abstract:
Anaemia is a debilitating condition of the blood caused by iron deficiency and is potentially dangerous. Nurses have an important role to play in managing and assessing the condition. Ways to detect anaemia include blood sampling and the Schilling test. Methods to investigate and diagnosis anaemia are presented, plus information on thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia and anaemias in pregnancy.

Is flexible rostering helpful?
Article Abstract:
Shiftwork is necessary for nurses, but can have negative effects on them. Permanent night nurses are more satisfied with their jobs when working regular systems. Flexible rostering is thought to cut staff recruitment and retention problems. Flexible rostering and self-scheduling will occur more often in future, according to Brown.

Audit pinpoints IV drug administration pitfalls
Article Abstract:
Nurses are spending more time giving intravenous (IV) drugs. A clinical audit of nurses' workloads at Wycombe General Hospital reveals that time could be saved, if nurses followed practice guidelines more carefully. Intravenous therapy will be reviewed and prescription practice improved as a result of the audit.
