The search for a credible model for the teacher/lecturer in practice
Article Abstract:
The English National Board conducted research into the role of the nurse lecturer in practice. This is an important issue due to the criticism of university-based nurse education concerning its ability to produce good practical nurses. A survey of people holding this post revealed that they identified their role as being a link between the academic and practice environments but with additional responsibilities for research and development concerning nursing practice. The research also revealed structures and issues which could be addressed to develop this role.

The role of the nurse on the consultant's ward round
Article Abstract:
Astudy of nurses accompanying consultants on ward rounds revealed that many nurses feel that their role is seen as passive. There was also a feeling that that they are seen as a token of the consultant's status, and that their opinions are not taken into consideration. Other nurses thought that their presence benefited the patient as they were able to give explanations of medical terms. The nurse's role on rounds could be more positive if nurses caring for individual patients were able to be in attendance during the consultant's ward round.

Support for advocacy
Article Abstract:
The nurse was identified as a patient's chief advocate in the late 1980s. Conflict can often arise between a nurse's desire to support a patient's rights and the constraints of a bureaucratic health-care system. Other problems areas include a nurse's desire to produce change for a group of patients. The conflicts of the role of the nurse as a patient's advocate is discussed, giving an example case of charge nurse, Graham Pink.
