Three methods of opioid detoxification in a primary care setting: a randomized trial
Article Abstract:
The drugs clonidine, naltrexone or buprenorphine may be useful when trying to detoxify heroin addicts in a primary care setting. Methadone is normally used for this purpose, but federal regulations would prohibit its use in the primary care setting. Researchers tested an 8-day detoxification program in 162 heroin addicts using either clonidine, clonidine and naltrexone or buprenorphine. Eighty-one percent of those who received clonidine and naltrexone or buprenorphine were successfully detoxified, compared to 65% of those taking clonidine alone. Buprenorphine caused fewer withdrawal symptoms.
