Old diseases die hard: diseases such a cholera and polio, forgotten in the West, have shown worrying signs of re-emergence. Now public health experts warn that our guard must be kept up
Article Abstract:
Public health nurses have warned that diphtheria and cholera are re-emerging in the eastern European states following the disappearance of child immunisation programmes. Diphtheria has reached epidemic levels in the former Soviet states and cholera levels have risen. Severe economic collapse along with faltering food and fuel supplies and contaminated water supplies have contributed to the re-emergence.
