Tighter self-regulation of fertility industry sought
Article Abstract:
American Medical Association (AMA) delegates approved a policy in summer 1996 that calls for strengthened self-regulation by physicians who offer fertility services. An AMA report notes that the physicians receive little government oversight. A 1992 federal law that outlines voluntary standards for fertility clinics has yet to take effect. The AMA report says there is potential for the unauthorized use of eggs and other unethical practices by reproductive specialists. The report stops short of recommending government regulation.

Benefits seen in regulating fertility medicine
Article Abstract:
Governmental oversight of fertility medicine is welcome due to ethical concerns and the profession's desire to maintain its reputation. The American Fertility Society has guidelines for reproductive medicine, but no authority to enforce them. State licensing laws do not regulate a physician's selection of a specialty; however, the Federal Trade Commission does regulate false advertising of credentials. Additionally, Representative Ron Wyden has proposed a model certification program for fertility laboratories.

Giving ethics guidance through medicine's moral thicket
Article Abstract:
A stellar group of medical ethicists spoke at the American Medical Assn's Mar 1997 medical ethics conference. Most speakers agreed that the medical ethics code is as important in 1997 as it was in the past. The ethical challenges posed by a lack of universal health-insurance coverage and by managed care were among the conference's recurring themes. Dr. Edmund D. Pellegrino characterized the ethics code as a 'moral compass.'
