Surgeon General's conference on agriculture
Article Abstract:
Several recommendations to prevent injury to farm workers were approved at the Surgeon General's Conference on Agricultural Safety and Health in 1991. Although only two percent of US workers are involved in agriculture, they have a high rate of fatal injuries. More than half of all machine-related deaths in the US involve farm machinery. Racial and ethnic minority workers have a higher risk of injury than non-Hispanic whites. Farm workers have the highest incidence of skin diseases and the sixth-highest incidence of respiratory diseases. The conference, sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended research to identify the specific risks associated with farm work, including amputation, eye injury and pesticide poisoning. Attendees also recommended redesigning farm machinery, using less toxic pesticides and training farm workers to use protective equipment.
