Isreal's Worst Enemy
Article Abstract:
The inflation rate in Israel, reaching 500 per cent in recent weeks, has a yearly rise estimated to level out at 300 per cent. Because the government suppresses unemployment, Israel is inflation-prone. When unemployment strikes, the government aids uncompetitive industries or channels the unemployed into government jobs. The devaluation of Israel's shekel also contributed to the recent rise in inflation. Banks and the price of bank stocks were temporarily used to stem inflation. Finally even the banks gave in and ended their market intervention. Israel may take a lesson from Iceland, which solved a similar inflation problem. Iceland suspended indexation of wages and prices, allowing only a small fraction of cost- of-living allowances. Since then inflation has eased to ten per cent, and the government is planning to cut the budget.
