Too much free choice could undermine reforms
Article Abstract:
Citizens of the United States want health care reform without giving up something in exchange. For instance, consumers want coverage but object to extra taxes, physicians wish to retain fee for services and insurers resist combining health risk groups. The Clinton administration may try to satisfy too many diverse demands. A tiered system would allow wealthier persons to choose higher benefits. However, managed competition would place everyone in the same pool and offer a limited number of competing health providers.

Breast study woes preview reform barriers
Article Abstract:
Health insurers are turning down requests for them to pay as much as $200,000 for high dose chemotherapy/autologous bone marrow transplants for breast cancer victims. Because of this, the National Cancer Institute is sponsoring randomized trials to establish the treatment's efficacy. However, the trials are having trouble attracting patients for many reasons, such as the high mortality rate for patients using conventional treatment, strict participation criteria and a lack of publicity about the trials.
