Improper mixing of formula due to reuse of hospital bottles
Article Abstract:
Exclusive breastfeeding avoids potentially serious errors in preparing infant formula. Such errors are common. An 18-day-old boy was admitted to a hospital with constipation and lack of interest in breastfeeding. He was receiving three bottles of formula per day. For the prior two days, his mother used 3-ounce bottles she brought home from the hospital to mix powdered formula. Because the marking on the hospital bottles was confusing, she was mixing formula with half the amount of water required. The baby was not harmed, possibly because partial breastfeeding minimized the adverse effects of overly concentrated feedings. A 1988 study showed that 30% of mothers made errors in preparing formula. Some mothers of small or preterm infants may deliberately prepare overly concentrated formula believing it will promote growth. Overly concentrated formula can lead to dehydration, high blood sugar, disseminated intravascular coagulation, gangrene, and coma.

Oral manifestations of HIV infection
Article Abstract:
HIV infections appear to frequently affect the mouth. Researchers have presented guidelines based on current research for identifying and treating 16 mouth conditions commonly seen in patients with HIV. Physical appearance can identify many of these conditions and others require further laboratory testing. Currently available drugs can effectively treat seven common mouth infections seen in patients with HIV. There is no currently available treatment to reverse cancerous mouth conditions but drug treatment may provide relief and allow the patients to eat and function.
