Towards a world without polio
Article Abstract:
The number of poliomyelitis cases continues to decline around the world as countries take steps to totally eradicate the disease. Further progress is expected in the drive against polio as more immunization and acute flaccid paralysis surveillance programs are put in place by concerned governments.

Prospects for new vaccines
Article Abstract:
Bacterial viruses are responsible for killing over 8 million newborn infants every year. Research is focusing on genetic engineering to create harmless viruses to carry antigens into the body. Additional genes are necessary and must be transplanted to help develop a stronger immune response.

The WHO Expanded Programme on Immunization is able to distribute 80% of the people in need in developing countries. New challenges for the organization include meeting increased demand, maintaining health standards and developing new vaccines for newer strains of viral and bacterial viruses.
