Article Abstract:

A coalition of physicians' groups, health care organizations and individuals sponsored an Indianapolis 500 car at the 1992 race, but 'Tobacco Free' captured far less media attention than Philip Morris Inc's Marlboro cigarette logo. The Marlboro logo was seen on race cars, clothing, banners, golf carts, fences and fuel storage tanks. However, the 'Tobacco Free' slogan was never mentioned by sportscasters during the five-hour ABC broadcast. A 'New York Times' article mentioned the car, but also noted that one 'Tobacco Free' crew member was seen smoking a cigarette.

Article Abstract:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering the regulation of tobacco as a drug. The most important aim of regulation is preventing young people from starting to smoke. The American Medical Assn supports the regulation of tobacco, and published an analysis of 30-year-old research by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., which proved tobacco to be addictive. Interested observers express opinions for and against the FDA's designation of tobacco as a drug.

CMA ends battle over educational use of cigarette tax

Article Abstract:

The California Medical Assn (CMA) decided to discontinue its efforts at diverting cigarette taxes for uses other than educational as promulgated in California Proposition 99. The provisions of Proposition 99, which set aside 20% of the tax revenues for educational purposes, amount to over $100 million. CMA has tried to get these funds spent on direct health care for indigent children and women.
