New technologies permit safe abortion at less than six weeks' gestation and provide timely detection of ectopic gestation
Article Abstract:
Early abortion before six weeks of gestation may be safe, possible, and permit early detection of ectopic pregnancy. Researchers performed 1530 abortions on women who were less than six weeks pregnant by using vaginal ultrasound to detect pregnancy and dilation and curettage with suction to remove it. Abortions were considered complete when the chorionic membrane could be identified in the removed tissue or when beta-human chorionic gonadotropin blood levels had dropped to normal. Nine (0.6%) ectopic pregnancies were detected; three were removed surgically and six were ended chemically with methotrexate.
