Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome With Chinese Herbal Medicine: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Article Abstract:
Chinese herbal medicine CHM appears to be beneficial in the treatment of inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS). Researchers randomly assigned 116 patients with IBS to receive a general Chinese herbal preparation, one that was tailored specifically for them, or a placebo. Treatment lasted 16 weeks and all patients were evaluated by a gastroenterologist at that start of the study, and again at 8 and 16 weeks. Patients who received either CHM preparation had significantly fewer symptoms during the study compared to the placebo group. The improvement was most likely to last in those who received the indivudualized preparation.
