Treatment strategies for bacteria and viruses: Why clinical management must be different
Article Abstract:
It is essential that nurses understand the differences between bacteria and viruses, because once they realize how antibiotics work, it becomes clear why they are effective only against bacteria. The main differences between the two are that while both can cause diseases, bacteria can survive independently, but virus invades a living cell, so only bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, while infections caused by virus can be tackled by preventive methods like vaccination or infection control methods like hygiene.

Legionella bacteria and water systems in health care premises
Article Abstract:
Legionnaires' disease is an opportunistic infection caused primarily by the inhalation of Legionella bacteria in the form of a mist, as produced by contaminated showers, cooling towers, whirlpool spas, and other such water systems. Constant vigilance for the factors that support the growth of Legionellae, and the implementation of effective preventive measures, can successfully reduce the incidence of this water-borne nosocomial infection.

Combating a rising incidence of Legionnaire's disease
Article Abstract:
The Health Protection Agency has reported an increase in the incidence of Legionnaire's disease in England and Wales and hence the nurses should be aware of the symptoms and the health measures that need to be taken. The primary treatment includes antibiotics and supportive therapy and the outbreaks of this disease have the most impact on vulnerable groups such as older people.
