Hunting-associated injuries and wearing "hunter" orange clothing - New York, 1989-1995
Article Abstract:
A 1992 program by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to promote the use of orange clothing among hunters has reduced the injury rate 27% between 1992 and 1995. However, a survey of hunting injuries by DEC in 1995 reveals that many hunters are still not wearing orange. Between 1989 and 1995, 356 reported injuries involved two hunters. In about one-third of the injuries, the injured hunter was mistaken for game. In 76% of the incidents, the injured hunter was not wearing orange clothing. Ninety-four percent of those mistaken for game were not wearing orange.

People who use snowmobiles should drive carefully and avoid using alcohol while operating the vehicle. Between the winters of 1991 and 1996, there were 1,355 snowmobile accidents in the state of Maine. Almost 80% involved excessive speed or careless operation of the vehicle. Thirteen percent involved the use of alcohol. Most of the accidents involved collisions. Thirty-nine people died as a result of the accident and 41% had elevated blood alcohol levels at the time of the accident. The annual death rate from snowmobile accidents increased in Maine during this time period.
