How well they remember: the accuracy of parent reports
Article Abstract:
Parental recall of their child's medical history appears to be accurate enough to be useful for research purposes. Researchers asked a group of 288 parents of children aged 1 to 13 about the incidence of asthma, bronchitis, middle ear infection, accidents, hospitalizations, office visits and birth weight. Their answers were compared with medical records. Three-quarters of the parents remembered their child's birth weight within 50 grams, and most remembered many of their child's hospitalizations. Parental education and occupation were not associated with accuracy of recall. Parental recall of accidents may be more accurate than medical records because children may be treated elsewhere, and information may be lacking in the primary pediatrician's records.
