Trends in prescriptions for highly active antiretroviral therapy in four New York City HIV clinics
Article Abstract:
Most HIV patients are now taking highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), according to a survey of four New York City HIV clinics. In 1998, HAART prescriptions made up 89% of all AIDS drug prescriptions, up from 54% in 1997. Patients who were relatively healthy were just as likely to receive HAART as those who were most sick.

Detection of infectious HIV in circulating monocytes from patients on prolonged highly active antiretroviral therapy
Article Abstract:
Immune system cells called monocytes may act as a reservoir of infectious HIV in patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). This was the conclusion of a study of five such patients, all of whom had undetectable blood levels of the virus.

Development of in vitro resistence to macrophage-tropic- and T-cell-line-adapted HIV-1 strains among HIV-positive volunteers treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy
Article Abstract:
After six months of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), five HIV patients who were susceptible to HIV became resistant. This was marked by a drop in viral levels and an increase in CD4+ T cell counts.
