Trends in the number of sexual partners among American women
Article Abstract:
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be spread by heterosexual relations. This mode of transmission is currently prevalent in Africa but not in the United States. However, heterosexual transmission may occur more frequently in the United States in the future. A study was conducted on the sexual habits of 797 American women in 1983. White women less than 35 years old had on the average 5.5 sexual partners in their lifetimes, which was twice the number reported by women 55 years or older. Black women aged 40 or older had had more sexual partners than white women of the same age. In women less than 40 years old, there was little difference by race in the number of partners. Overall, the number of sexual partners among American women is low, which is reassuring for the control of the spread of AIDS through heterosexual relationships. However, younger women, between the ages of 20 and 39, have more sexual partners and were younger when they had their first sexual experience, as compared with older women. These trends indicate that sexual behavior has changed in ways that might promote the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS. In order to prevent the transmission of HIV infection, young women must be educated on safe sexual practices, such as limiting the number of sexual partners, selecting sexual partners who are at low risk for HIV infection, and using barrier contraception. Electric blanket use and breast cancer risk among younger women
Article Abstract:
A study to find the relationship, if any, between electric blanket use and breast cancer risk in women under the age of 55 has been carried out. Electric blanket use is a major source of electromagnetic field exposure in the home. In those aged 44 and under and in the group aged 45-55, little or no risk appears to be associated with having used electric blankets or other electric bed-heating devices at all, and the duration of use seems unrelated as well. The associations under investigation were not substantially confounded by potential breast cancer risk factors associated with electric blanket use. Case patients studied numbered 2,199.

Hip fractures among infertile women
Article Abstract:
A cohort study suggested women with consistently irregular menses may have a greater risk of hip fracture. In the study, 2,333 women were diagnosed with infertility at a mean age of 28.6 years. The were followed for a mean of 23.6 years during which time 38 hip fractures were reported. Suboptimal peak bone mass has been linked to reproductive and menstrual disorders. And although nulliparity has been associated with bone loss and fractures, infertility has not been evaluated in relationship to osteoporosis.
