Trends in total caries experience: permanent and primary teeth
Article Abstract:
The number of children with cavities has dropped substantially since the early 1970s. Since that time, the average number of decayed, missing, or filled permanent teeth among children aged 6 to 18 decreased 57%, from 4.4 to 1.9. The average number of decayed, missing, or filled primary teeth among children 2 to 10 years old decreased 40%, from 2.3 to 1.4. This will have a substantial impact on dentistry because dentists will spend less time treating diseased teeth.

Trends in untreated caries in permanent teeth of children 6 to 18 years old
Article Abstract:
Children appear to have fewer cavities in the 1990s than in the 1970s. Researchers analyzed data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Between NHANES I in 1974 and NHANES III in 1994, the number of teeth with an untreated cavity in children between 6 and 18 years old dropped 77% overall. The drop in the number of teeth with cavities occurred even in poor children and children in various ethnic groups.
