Triumphs and trials: 1996 was a mixed bag of conflict, controversy and success
Article Abstract:
A mental health charter was published by the government in January 1996, but this was followed by figures showing that the number of community psychiatric nurses was dropping. In February nurses were awarded a 2% national pay rise and the RCN demanded a 6.5% rise. In March, nurses treating the injured children of the Dunblane primary school were given counselling. In April there was a call for rapists and paedophiles to be prevented from rejoining the register, and pay was on the agenda once more in May. The government published its final primary care White Paper in December pledging that nurse prescribing will be operational by April 1998.

Mental health crisis in the capital
Article Abstract:
There are serious problems associated with the provision of acute services for the mentally ill in London, England. Violence has become common in intensive care units, where there are severe staff shortages and extensive use has to be made of agency nurses. Intensive care units must deal with the needs of people living in some of the most deprived areas of Europe, and must often cope with large numbers of refugees suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Many nurses do not wish to work in London, and this can have a negative impact on standards of patient care.

Postscripts from the edge
Article Abstract:
A number of ex-nurses with a background of mental health problems have formed a local support group in London, England. They find it helpful to be with other people who understand the stresses of the nursing profession. They do not believe that nursing was the root cause of their mental illnesses, but they think that it may have exacerbated their problems. They recall the shock and grief of being confronted with disfigurement and death at an early age, and they believe the health service does little to support nurses' mental health.
