Tucked up by the flu
Article Abstract:
Many people suffering from flu inappropriately sought admission to hospital during the Christmas 1998 period, despite insistence by medical personnel that flu is incurable and the symptoms are best treated at home. Sufferers were advised to take either aspirin or paracetamol, drink fluids and rest in bed, with symptoms likely to disappear after a few days. Doctors were requested not to make hospital referrals for flu unless patients also suffered from other conditions such as heart complaints. Some medical officials claim people have forgotten how to care for their own health.

Ready for the biggest party yet
Article Abstract:
UK hospitals are preparing to cope with over-indulgent partygoers on New Year's Eve 1999. The Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust, Edinburgh, Scotland, is accustomed to caring for extra patients during the festive season, and is advising other hospitals how to cope. The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust has been studying the health of people who visit nightclubs for a number of years and has persuaded nightclubs to provide their own emergency equipment and employ nursing staff.

The pressure's on
Article Abstract:
UN National Health Service hospitals are taking steps to ensure that they are prepared for a possible influenza epidemic in winter 1999/2000, following a crisis in 1998/1999. The Norfolk and Norwich Health Care NHS Trust, which used a refrigerated lorry for dead bodies at the beginning of 1999 because of the crisis, will make 171 surgical beds available for medical cases. The hospital will have difficulty keeping down waiting lists.
