The fusion of tumor cells with host cells; reflections on an ovarian tumor
Article Abstract:
Ovarian tumor results from the cell fusion between macrophages and cystic tumor cells that are incubated at 37 degree Centigrade in a nutrient medium containing some form of fusion catalyst such as cholesterol crystals. The cells are arranged uniquely inside the cavity and their surfaces are covered with mucinous carcinoma. Fusogenic membranes can be found in the nodules as a result of the breakdown of the cells. Sarcomatoid cells with immunohistochemical features of carcinoma cells and macrophages are also present inside the cavity.

The worm and the tumor: reflections on Fibiger's Nobel prize
Article Abstract:
Johannes Fibiger was awarded the 1926 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for his work on the parasitic worm Gongylonema neoplastica and its role in cancer. However, further studies disputed Fibiger's claim that cancer in rats is spread by worms. Possibilities are being raised on the process of carcinogenesis by infectious agents. Yet if Fibiger's findings were not so strongly rejected earlier, our awareness on the likely role of infectious agents on the causes of cancer would have been hastened.
