Turmoil in Rhode Island: for-profit hospital bid, out-of-state buy raise concerns
Article Abstract:
Rhode Island (R.I.) authorities are concerned about a possible influx of for-profit hospital chains into a state so characterized by its proliferation of non-profit hospitals. Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., the largest for-profit hospital chain in the US, intends to acquire Providence, R.I.'s non-profit hospital Roger Williams Medical Center. Other proposed merger deals involving for-profit hospitals in 1997 are discussed. R.I. state lawmakers have proposed bills that would ban for-profit acquisitions of non-profit hospitals.
