Two-year clinical evaluation of an amalgam adhesive
Article Abstract:
Amalgam adhesive appears to be as effective as pins in strengthening remaining tooth structure in dental fillings. Researchers compared amalgam adhesive to pins in a study of 38 patients who had a tooth filled. One group received a filling using pins while the other two groups received various formulations of amalgam and adhesive. Two years later, all the fillings were rated highly in terms of filling retention, tooth sensitivity, and recurring cavities. The use of amalgam adhesive could eliminate the need to remove weakened tooth structure.

Clinical performance of bonded amalgam restorations at 42 months
Article Abstract:
An adhesive resin liner under a dental filling appears to be as effective as copal varnish and zinc phosphate cement. This was the conclusion of researchers who followed 14 people who had received an adhesive resin liner and 16 who had received the conventional bases. After 42 months, all the restorations were intact, in good condition, and were free of secondary cavities.

Clinical evaluation of amalgam bonding in Class I and II restorations
Article Abstract:
The authors evaluate the use of amalgam for bonding to the tooth structure, and provide evidence from clinical use to show that it does not have drawbacks such as lack of adequate strength or producing sensitivity. This, they suggest, means there does not seem to be a need to use adhesives in these restorations.
