U.S. recruiters look for big influx of Canadian physicians
Article Abstract:
Canadian doctors are more likely to qualify for H-1B temporary visas than other alien doctors. Changes to the Miscellaneous and Technical Immigration and Naturalization Amendments of 1991 allow foreign doctors wanting to provide patient care in the US to qualify for H-1B temporary visas if they pass the Federal Licensing Examination (FLEX) and are competent in English or graduate from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Canadian medical schools are traditionally accredited by the LCME, and the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada examination may soon be designated as equivalent to the FLEX.

Picking up the pieces; doctors struggle to rebuild practices in aftermath of Andrew
Article Abstract:
The devastation that Hurricane Andrew inflicted in south Dade County, FL, left many physicians, like Barry Siegel, DO, without a usable office. Also, many doctors were isolated by the lack of telephone service and power. Among area hospitals, only Baptist Hospital was able to function normally. Dade County Medical Assn provided displaced physicians with information on colleagues willing to share their offices. Members of Broward County Medical Assn volunteered services and equipment after the storm.

Rebuild or relocate? South Florida officials worry about future of storm-tossed doctors
Article Abstract:
Many physicians' offices were destroyed by Hurricane Andrew when it hit south Dade County, FL. Members of the Dade County Medical Assn suggest that primary care physicians and other valued colleagues be employed by temporary government clinics to prevent their leaving the area, since recruiters are offering doctors well-paid positions if they agree to relocate. The medical association is also helping patients and doctors find each other.
