Educational programs in US medical schools, 1996-1997
Article Abstract:
Statistics about educational programs in the 124 US and 16 Canadian medical schools are discussed. There were 95,568 full-time faculty members in the 1996-97 academic year, up about 5% from the previous year. The number of emergency medicine faculty jumped 29% and the second biggest increase, at 13%, was in family medicine. A total of 46,968 college graduates applied to medical school in 1996 and the number of minority students admitted decreased 4% from the previous year. Overall, there were 66,712 students in medical school in the 1996-97 school year.

Article Abstract:
Changes in the health care industry are impacting medical education. A survey of medical education in 1997-98 revealed that the number of applicants to medical schools dropped 8.4% from the year before. The number of applicants from minority groups dropped 11% from the previous year and the number of minority applicants who were accepted decreased 8.4%. Over half the medical schools reported a decline in the number of hospital patients in some of their teaching hospitals. Almost one-third of the schools had difficulty recruiting physicians to teach.
