Unions condemn 'take and convey' plans as unethical
Article Abstract:
The Mental Health Bill currently being debated by the House of Commons contains so-called 'take and convey' powers requiring psychiatric nurses to escort community-based patients between work placements, treatment centres and their home. These powers could also apply to doctors, the police and social workers. Such an approach is contrary to human rights and cannot be seen as ethical, according to nurse unions, charities and mental health pressure groups. Some observers believe that treating mentally ill patients in this way would destroy the therapeutic relationship between mental health nurses and patients.

Helping with inquiries
Article Abstract:
The Metropolitan Police is addressing the problems faced by officers when dealing with people with mental health problems by making a policy statement on its treatment of these people. It is also developing a distance-learning programme to improve awareness among officers of mental health issues and employing community psychiatric nurse David Etherington to work with officers at central London police stations. It is hoped that the one-year pilot scheme will be effective in diverting the mentally ill away from the criminal justice system.
