Unions set sights on national award
Article Abstract:
Nursing unions are calling for a return to a national pay review body. The local pay scheme is not working, with many health trusts not fulfilling the promised top-up pay awards. The unions are warning that without sufficient improvement in pay and conditions there will be a staffing crisis. During the next 10 years a quarter of nurses could retire, a quarter will be over 50 years old combined with a reduction in new recruits wishing to join the profession. The outlook for next year's pay awards remains bleak.
