Universal vaccination plan gives way to compromise
Article Abstract:
Pres Clinton has downscaled his universal child vaccination plan to about one-third of its original $1 billion cost. The new plan would allow the federal government to buy vaccine at a discount and distribute it to Medicaid beneficiaries and children without health insurance. In addition, physicians could charge an administration fee, and money from the Centers for Disease Control could assist states in tracking immunization. Republican leaders introduced their own vaccination counterproposal, which includes raising Medicaid immunization eligibility to 185% of the poverty level.

DNA copying technique may help in controlling multidrug-resistant TB
Article Abstract:
A research team at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is testing the use of a DNA-copying method known as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of tuberculosis (TB) and other pathogens. PCR is specific and sensitive to extremely small numbers of M. tuberculosis organisms, and diagnoses can be made in a day, compared to three to twelve weeks for traditional methods. PCR cannot detect if a TB virus is one of the emerging multidrug-resistant strains, so it should be used as a complement to other diagnostic techniques.

Experts say TB plan is comprehensive, but states wonder who will pay
Article Abstract:
Health experts laud the federal government's new plan for controlling drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), but public health leaders question whether the program will be adequately funded. The report recommends directly observed therapy as treatment for TB, especially drug-resistant strains. All the plan's provisions are to be implemented by 1995. Start dates and groups responsible for implementation are specified. However, public health officials report that they do not have the funds or personnel to implement the plans.
