A clinical isolate of Neisseria gonorrhoeae with in vitro resistance to erythromycin and decreased susceptibility to azithromycin
Article Abstract:
National surveillance efforts may be needed to detect emerging strains of drug-resistant Neisseria (N.) gonorrhoeae. A case of N. gonorrhoeae in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1993 was resistant to both erythromycin and azithromycin. Erythromycin is typically used to treat gonorrhea in patients allergic to penicillin, and azithromycin is used to treat coexisting infections. Although azithromycin resistance is thought to be rare, resistance to erythromycin correlates with resistance to azithromycin. Resistance to azithromycin may increase as its use increases.
