Update: cardiac-related events during the civilian smallpox vaccination program -- United States, 2003
Article Abstract:
Thirty of the 36,217 US civilians who received the smallpox vaccine as of May 9, 2003, developed a heart disease as a direct result. Nine had a heart attack or angina and 21 developed an inflammation of the heart called myopericarditis. This is higher than the rate in the military smallpox vaccination program, in which 37 of 449,198 military personnel developed myopericarditis.
