What's new in transplant immunology: problems and prospects
Article Abstract:
Long-term survival of transplanted organs may require induction of immune tolerance rather than simply global immunosuppression. Immunosuppressive drugs improve short-term graft survival, but late organ rejection remains as common as in 1975. Immune function may be necessary for antigen-specific recognition and tolerance of transplanted tissue to develop. Researchers have transplanted donor antigens into the recipient thymus gland, and introduced donor bone marrow at the time of organ transplantation, to promote immune tolerance. These techniques may prevent late graft rejection.

Update in allergy and immunology
Article Abstract:
The results of several studies on allergy identification and treatment are reviewed. Many studies have addressed the importance of thorough questioning and follow-up to identify the source of an allergic skin reaction. Other studies have identified connections between allergies and thyroid disease and mental disorders, respectively. A protein called phospholipid-free B2-glycoprotein-1 may play a significant role in the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and warfarin may be an effective treatment. The most effective time to take asthma medication may be at 3 p.m.
