Update in cardiology
Article Abstract:
Recent research into heart disease is advancing our understanding of its mechanisms, prevention, and treatment. Research published in the past year has increased knowledge of the processes behind the formation of plaques within blood vessels as well as what causes the plaque to break away and become a clot. Research has also confirmed that reducing cholesterol levels is beneficial especially in persons with heart disease. New medications show promise in treating aortic regurgitation, and research shows that persons with atrial fibrillation may benefit from anticlotting medication. Finally, a study of immunosuppressive drugs to treat myocarditis found them ineffective.

Update in cardiology
Article Abstract:
There have been several important developments in heart research between 1995 and 1997. Most patients with long-term heart disease appear to benefit similarly from a balloon technique to widen heart vessels and bypass surgery. Pravastatin appears to decrease risk for further heart disease. Patients with congestive heart failure appear to benefit from beta-blockers and digoxin as well as exercise programs. Vitamin E has been shown to reduce the risk for further heart attacks or death from heart conditions but not overall death rates. Sexual activity does not seem to increase the risk for heart attacks.
