Use of health services by previously uninsured Medicare beneficiaries
Article Abstract:
Propensity-score methods are used for comparing self-reported health care use and expenditures for cohorts of previously uninsured Medicare beneficiaries and insured adults with similar characteristics, especially those with cardiovascular disease or diabetes. The analysis has shown that the costs of expanding health insurance for uninsured adults before they reach 65 years might be partially offset by subsequent reductions in the health care use and spending for these adults after the age of 65.

The measured quality of care of elderly Medicare beneficiaries in managed-care plans improved substantially from 1997 to 2003 and the racial disparities seemed to decline.
