Uses of leeches and leech saliva in clinical practice
Article Abstract:
Doctors use leeches to reduce the congestion of blood after plastic surgery to ears, fingers and skin flaps. Tiny veins often cannot be reconnected and the blood supply fails to flow properly from the affected area. Leeches inject anticoagulant into the area to keep it bleeding so that they can feed and this continued bleeding helps to re-establish the blood flow. Research is being carried out into the uses of leech saliva as a treatment for thrombosis and heart disease, as it is possible that the saliva contains an enzyme which will dissolve blood clots.
