Using an interactive video disk in breast cancer patient support
Article Abstract:
A shared decision-making programme for women with early breast cancer which uses a personalized, computerized interactive video disc system to assess surgical and adjuvant treatment options can play a role in reducing patient anxiety and in giving patients additional information about breast cancer. However, it is uncertain whether this approach is very effective in assisting patients in making decisions about their treatment. It seems that psychological support and information on treatment from a doctor and a clinical nurse specialist trained in communication skills can be just as effective as a video disc system.

Breast cancer: giving women a more proactive role
Article Abstract:
A breast cancer specialist nurse describes her intervention approach. Its aim is to help women take a more proactive role in the treatment of their breast cancer from the time of their initial diagnosis. The nurse meets with the patient before they meet the consultant to hear their diagnosis for the first time. She encourages the patient to express any fears, and notes any questions they would like answered. She then accompanies the patient into the consultation. The preparation ensures that issues of importance to the patient are raised despite the shock of the diagnosis.
