Vascular endothelial growth factor gene expression in ovine placenta and fetal membranes
Article Abstract:
The presence of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene in various parts of sheep placenta indicates that VEGF may control the development and function of blood vessels in the placenta. Researchers analyzed placentas from sheep fetuses close to the full term of pregnancy and found evidence of VEGF in the innermost and outermost tissues of the placenta. VEGF-121, VEGF-145, VEGF-165, and VEGF-189 were found in the cotyledon and outer parts of the placenta. VEGF-121 and VEGF-165, which are smaller forms of VEGF, were the only forms in the innermost placental tissues. VEGF may act locally to control development and permeability of blood vessels in placenta, and may influence the efficiency of fluid exchange from placenta to fetus.

Comparison of amniotic and intramembranous unidirectional permeabilities in late-gestation sheep
Article Abstract:
A hypothesis that the amnion is the rate-limiting barrier of intramembranous absorption is tested by comparing unidirectional permeabilities of the amnion in vitro and the intramembranous pathway in vivo. Amnion is found to be the major barrier, but it is not the only barrier and does not appear to be responsible for the unidirectional nature of intramembranous absorption.
