Virginity Examinations in Turkey: Role of Forensic Physicians in Controlling Female Sexuality
Article Abstract:
Forensic physicians in Turkey often examine young women for evidence of sexual activity. Examination of the hymen is sometimes used after allegations of adultery, prostitution, or premarital sex. Nearly half of surveyed physicians reported performing virginity examinations for social rather than medical or legal reasons, although 68% felt that such examinations were only appropriate after alleged sexual assaults. The examinations were reported to be traumatic, and often forced on the patients.
