Who would bring the profession together?
Article Abstract:
Physicians who criticize the American Medical Association (AMA) may not realize that the organization must represent thousands of generalists and specialists, including male and female and minority members. Specialty associations speak for their memberships, whose views may not agree with those of the average physician. The AMA also arbitrates disagreements between opposing groups. If this service were performed instead by a government agency, possibly including a number of lawyers, the results might not please physicians.

Perhaps it's time for physicians to sue their patients?
Article Abstract:
The patient of a physician developed complications. The physician had to take time to consult with the patient's insurance company, provide the patient's chart for review by specific hospital boards and then provide copies of the patient's records for a lawyer. The physician is worried he will lose his practice if a case is presented and is lost. The physician wonders whether it is time for the physician to sue the patient for extra time involved in the case and emotional anguish.

Would it be less frustrating if we had never known?
Article Abstract:
Younger physicians do not know what they are missing by being unable to keep patients in the hospital as long as they deem necessary or sit down with them directly to settle the bill. As a result, they are not as frustrated as older doctors. Older physicians have a responsibility to teach younger ones about the importance of these things and draw them into the efforts of organized medicine to protect the rights of physicians and their patients.
