Losing weight can bring out the worst in friends of the dieter. So-called friends will often sabotage dieting efforts by expressing negative opinions, such as disagreeing with the need for a diet or telling the dieter that they'll never lose weight. Skinny and gung-ho friends can also hurt efforts.

People who are losing weight often feel that they will automatically become a happier and more loved person when they lose weight. Realistically, weight loss can create social problems, such as body image problems, feeling objectified, and finding out that being thin doesn't solve problems.
