A FACCT-filled agenda for public information
Article Abstract:
The Foundation for Accountability (FACCT) is helping to translate the various measures used to assess the quality of medical care into publications that consumers can understand. FACCT was created in 1995 to help consumers make informed decisions about health care. It takes data from several sources that collect performance statistics, including the National Committee on Quality Assurance, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. It also incorporates comments from patients about which elements of care they consider important.

AMA's science reporters conference focuses on contraception and prevention of premature birth
Article Abstract:
Researchers attending the American Medical Association's 15th Annual Science Reporters Conference stated an urgent need to provide effective contraception and family planning services to American women. The rate of unplanned pregnancies in the US is much higher than in other developed countries. Many poor women can not afford family planning services and many insurance plans do not cover all major contraceptives. Other researchers discussed the dismal progress in preventing premature birth and the recent FDA approval of an emergency contraceptive.
