Women's views on the role of the midwife
Article Abstract:
Most women pregnant with their first baby expect to be supported by an approachable and experienced midwife, according to a survey of 54 pregnant women. Three out of 15 pregnant teenagers claimed they would not visit parentcraft classes, while classes would be attended by all 12 of the over-30 age group surveyed and 20 out of 27 of those aged 22-30. Just three of the teenagers planned to breastfeed, with five undecided and seven planning to bottlefeed. Thirty seven of the 54 women surveyed believed midwives also provided postnatal care, with 14 believing a doctor would be present at the delivery.

Reducing risks from lifting
Article Abstract:
The RCN launched a 'Safer Patient Handling Campaign' in 1996 which aimed to reduce the lifting of patients. Now, at the end of 1997, the campaign seems to be having an effect because between 50% and 60% of health trusts have overcome the problem of patient handling by using hoists. Other new equipment has been bought and safe handling policies have been developed. However, the situation is not so good in nursing and residential homes because there is not enough money to invest in new equipment and the homes are not regularly checked by the Health and Safety Executive.
