Working in expanding roles
Article Abstract:
There has been a significant increase in the number of opportunities to extend or expand the nursing role in the UK. The key criterion for assessing whether it is appropriate for nurses to assume a new role is whether this will benefit patients. Taking on extended roles has become particularly common among nurses based in high dependency, intensive care, surgical and accident and emergency environments. In many cases, extended roles have emerged mainly because nurses have wished to assist patients whose treatment was being delayed because they had to wait for a junior doctor to undertake a particular procedure, such as inserting a central venous line.

Growing up with a stoma
Article Abstract:
Stoma nurses have a vital role in helping to support and advise children and teenagers with stomas. Teenagers need advice on telling their partners and prospective employers. Many are concerned about having children. Guidance on good hygiene practices and care of stoma bags is also important. Some bag manufactures have information literature for sufferers. Around 80% of stoma surgery occurs on children under the age of six weeks. Stoma surgery is performed for a variety of conditions affecting the bowel or bladder.

The missing links: attitudes to treating eating disorders are changing
Article Abstract:
The Annex Nursing Development Unit, is part of Pathfinder Mental Health Service NHS Trusting in London, and is a nurse led unit for adults with eating disorders. All patients attend voluntarily, and the four nurse practitioners aim to help them set goals. More patients can be treated because it is on an out-patients basis. Another nursing-led service is High Meadow in Burnley, Lancashire, which provides in-patient care in a converted house. It has a relaxed approach, enabling nurses to act as role models.
